Bettws RFC Darts
Since its formation in 2023, the Bettws RFC Darts Section has gone from strength to strength, quickly establishing itself as one of the most competitive teams in the Newport Central Darts League.
Our journey began with the club entering a brand-new team into Division 2. It proved to be a remarkable debut season, with Bettws playing 35 league matches, winning 30 and losing just 5 to storm to the Division 2 title by more than 30 points.
Success didn’t stop with the league championship. Bettws dominated the end-of-season competitions, with Captain Scott Merrett, John James, Mike Heard, and “Storming” Norman Heard lifting the Four-a-Side title. Mike Heard and Norman Heard went on to win the Pairs Championship, while John James capped off an incredible campaign by defeating Mike Heard in the Singles Final to become Singles Champion.
Building on that success, the following season saw Bettws expand to two teams: Bettws A and the Star Wars B Team. Competing in Division 1 after promotion, the A Team secured a solid mid-table finish against stronger opposition. Meanwhile, the newly formed B Team gained valuable experience in their debut campaign, finishing just above the bottom two while providing an opportunity for the club’s next generation of players to flourish. Young stars Zach Williams and Kaylan Bates consistently impressed throughout the season and quickly became key members of the squad.
The 2025/26 season has been the club’s strongest yet. Bettws A recorded its highest-ever league finish by ending the campaign in an impressive 4th place in Division 1. The club also added more silverware, with Scott Merrett, John James, and Zach Williams winning the Three-a-Side Championship, defeating The Dodger 3-1 in the final. Bettws also reached the Four-a-Side Final, where Scott, John, Zach and Ken Williams narrowly missed out on the title in a thrilling 3-2 defeat to two-time champions King’s A, earning a well-deserved runners-up trophy.
As we head into the 2026/27 season, the growth of darts at Bettws RFC continues at an incredible pace. For the first time in the club’s history, three teams have been registered to compete across three divisions of the Newport Central Darts League. What started as a single team in 2023 has rapidly developed into one of the league’s biggest and most successful sections, reflecting the fantastic spirit, commitment and talent within the club.
With league titles, cup successes, a growing pool of experienced players and exciting young talent coming through, darts is truly thriving at Bettws Rugby Club, and the future has never looked brighter.
